A busy and enticing city, Porto has a population of almost 300,000 and is based around its harbour. Portugal's 'number two' city in terms of both size and importance, Porto boasts a historic downtown area and countless attractive buildings, many of which line the banks of the Douro River.
Just minutes to the north of Porto is Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport (OPO), located in Maia. Connected by metro trains and fast roads, Porto is easy to reach from the airport. The AeroBus is especially popular, stopping at a number of hotels along the way.

Porto is perhaps best known for its six stylish bridges, which cross the Douro River, including two that date back to the 19th century. The main business area of Porto features many small streets, local bars and charming shops, being centred around the Avenida dos Aliados and the Praça da Liberdade. This district is surrounded by a range of neighbourhoods, including several wealthy residential communities.
Much of the city has been thoroughly renovated and restored, with many of Porto's oldest buildings standing proudly alongside more modern structures and around spacious public squares. Of particular interest, the Ribeira area has gained UNESCO's prestigious title of World Heritage Site. Other highlights in the city include an eye-catching Baroque tower (the Torre dos Clérigos), Porto's cathedral, and the impressive Museu de Arte Contemporanea de Serralves art gallery.
